In writing, after researching, drafting, publishing on paper and digitally publishing- students finally finished their symbols research papers and presentations!!! You can check out their digital presentations below. (If you have trouble loading the videos, just click the circle in the right hand corner of the video box). The students had fun and showed highlighted some of the interesting facts that they learned during their research. I even learned some new things about a few of the symbols too!
In math, students have been working on understanding place value: making groups of tens and ones, knowing the value of a each digit, and comparing 2 digit numbers. The class is doing a great job! Every Friday during math is review Friday. Today I reassessed students on some of the past learning targets that they previously struggled with. I was really impressed with all of the growth that students have made. Next week we will post test place value and hopefully move on to 2 digit addition and subtraction. Over the last couple of weeks our class has been working so hard. They are researching, reading, writing, spelling and mathematician 1st graders. It is amazing to look at all the progress that each kid has made, but there is still more to learn in first grade.
This week in math we have moved on to place value. Our learning target is "I can use my understanding of place value to compare 2 digit numbers." Students need to know how to make groups of tens and ones to easily count. They need to know the value of each digit (in the # 38 the 3 is worth 30 or 3 tens and the 8 is worth 8 or 8 ones) and then they need to be able to compare 2 digit numbers and explain their thinking. The students work in small groups and rotate through stations ( meet with teacher, play a math game, computer math game, and goal binder) in order to practice place value in a variety of ways. Please use the following link below to practice some of these skills from our website. We will continue to have review Fridays where students can practice past learning targets such as working with equations and solving story problems. Place Value Symbaloo Students will soon be finishing up their U.S. symbols research informational writing. They are so excited to publish them on their fancy symbol shaped paper and we will be digitally publishing next week using a couple of cool apps to make our research come to life. This week students also learned about multi-syllable word endings tion and ture and they are doing great! This past week in math, the students continued to work on solving the 4 types of story problems using the 6 step bar model. The 4 types are: Add Together, Take Away, Put Together/Pull Apart (part, part, whole) and Comparison model. You can click on the Story Problem link below to see videos that show examples and instructions for solving the different types of problems using the 6 steps we are learning in class. Story Problem Webpage The 6 steps are: Read the problem, Rewrite the question as an answer, Write what the problem is about and draw the starting line, Draw the bar to fit the problem, Write your number sentences, and solve the problem. This may seem like a lot of steps in order to solve a word problem, but if your child can learn these 6 steps, they will be able to solve any story problem. This is also the same model that all teachers use in our building so it will be consistent as they get older. Students worked hard last week to wrap up their presidential writing and WOW are Ms. B and I impressed! Look for your child's writing below. Last week we had a few other highlights as well. First of all, Ms. B survived her first SOLO day! I had a district meeting Thursday and then was sick on Friday and she did a great job! Students also learned how to log onto the Chrome books using their school email address They were such great listeners and it was a huge success! Later on in the week Ms. B helped the students to get back on the Chrome books and access a web resource called Pebble-Go in order to research about U.S symbols. If you or your child want to check it out at home follow the link below and use the username: "timbercreek" and the login is: "login" (so original). You can also find it on my Language Arts page or Science/Social Studies pages.
