Pathways: Screech visited twice this week to tell students about 2 new spelling rules. When we hear the /KW/ sounds we will spell them with a QU. They also learned that Q always needs U. Screeched also taught us that when we hear /K/ at the beginning of the word, we can choose a C or K to spell that sound. However, more words start with C than with K so we should choose C if we aren't sure. We are continuing to review vowel town and the vowel spellings as well. Shared Reading: We are learning how to ask and answer questions about a text. This week we practiced asking questions before reading a text, during the text and after reading the text. We also practiced reading questions and highlighting sentences in the text that help us answer those questions. Math: Students have been learning strategies that help them to be fluent when solving addition and subtraction problems within 10. We will continue to work on that learning target ALL YEAR :) But now we are learning how to add and subtract accurately within 20. This week we learned how to use the number line to accurately add and subtract within 20. Writing: Over the last 2 weeks we have been learning how to write a specific topic sentence that includes a when, who and what (Over the summer, I went to Florida.) then we practiced writing 3 specific details and an ending sentence. We learned that we could end our writing by restating the topic sentence, asking a question related to our topic, or by writing how we feel about our topic. Students have been working very hard! Over the last 2 weeks we have had a lot of FUN! Some students got to eat lunch with Mrs. Farrell for green charts the whole month. We took a school wide KC royals picture. Our class earned a slipper day for great cafeteria behavior. We had 2 Watch Dog dads visit us. We had a fall party and we had the APEX program!!!! What a FUN filled couple of weeks!

The students are doing a great job working in their literacy stations. I have been meeting with students on their blue ribbon sight words. We had several friends earn their blue ribbons already and the rest of us are still practicing and making progress. We would love to see everyone in our class know these words by the end of 1st quarter. You can find resources under the sight words page to help your child practice. In Pathways students are practicing saying Vowel Town fast, finding the vowel sounds and giving the spellings of vowel sounds. We are also practicing spelling words with "What's your name E" and EE. We continued learning about the day and night sky this week focusing on the moon. We learned that the moon changes shapes or phases. The students listened to a cute story and observed time lapse videos of the real moon. In math, we reviewed our doubles facts and learned about near doubles facts (3+4, 4+5...). The students are getting better at using strategies to solve problems mentally. We will start our math fluency shortly. Look for level 1 to come home with the explanation. This week in writing we practiced writing using capitals, spaces and punctuation. We related the 3 writing goals to a traffic light. We practiced using our green, yellow and red markers to check our writing for all three goals. This past month we have learning about being Respectful to our peers and adults. This class is very respectful to me and each other. They are a great group of friends who care for one another. Although all of our students are respectful, Alyssa Garcia is our class award winner. She is always helping others and myself. She takes turns, solves problems respectfully and is always very kind.
