During our Pathways to reading time we have been learning some new screech rules. Last week we learned that C makes 2 sounds (/c/ and /s/). We learned that C makes the /s/ sound when an e, i or y comes after it. Math: We have been working on adding and subtracting with in 20 and adding 3 numbers. Are class has done very well on this. Now we are learning how to "work with equations". When working with equations we should be able to tell if an equation is true or false (3+7 = 13-3 is True) and we should be able to fill in a missing number in a 3 part equation. (3 + ___ = 7 or ___ - 8 = 3) Reading: Over the last several weeks we have been learning how to retell stories using story elements and details from the text. Students have been listening to stories and using their retelling book marks to write about the beginning middle and end or to verbally retell the beginning, middle and end of the story. You can also practice this skill at home after reading a story or watching a movie. Students should be able to describe the main character and the setting of the story as well. Happy Retelling:) Dr. Driskill visited us and read us a story about Santa's Elf. The elf will be visiting each classroom. We can't wait to host the elf in our class! Science: In science we learned how light and sound can be used to communicate. We conducted an experimented with light to see what types of objects light could pass through. We also had a blast using the Maker Space room to create our own instruments. In small groups students shared how their instrument makes sound (what part vibrates) and how they could use it to communicate. They had a blast and they were all so creative!!!! Before Thanksgiving we met with some 2nd and 3rd graders to make a Thanksgiving turkey glyph! The kids worked as a team to problem solve when making their glyphs. They had a great time and made awesome turkeys!

Pathways: Over the last several weeks we have been working on reading and spelling words in our small groups. Students are rotating through 4 rotations: work with teacher, work on computer, read to self, and a word work/writing station. We have also been learning some new screech guides. We learned that y makes many different sounds. It says /y/ at the beginning of a word and /ie/ at the end of a short word. We did a lot of practice with these two spellings. We also learned that it can say /i/ in the middle of a word and /ee/ at the end of a long word, but we didn't focus as much on those spellings yet. This week we learned that C can make two sounds: /c/ and /s/. We learned that C makes the /s/ sound when the C is followed by an E, I, or Y. If it is followed by any other letter it says /k/. Reading Comprehension Learning Target: "I can retell literary text by using story elements and details from the text." We have been reading stories and describing the inside traits of characters (sad, honest, brave...) and proving how we know that. We also learned how to describe the setting by telling when and where the story take place and what it is like/would be like. This week we are learning how to retell the story by telling what happens at the beginning, middle and end of the story. We will continue practicing this skill orally and in written form. Math Learning Target: "I can add and subtract within 20." We have learned how to add and subtract 10 from a number, how to add doubles and near doubles, how to use related addition and fact families and how to add 3 numbers. Next week we will work on adding and subtracting within 20 generally. We will be reviewing these strategies and helping students bring it all together. Writing Learning Target:" I can write an informational text." We have been learning that informational text are true and contain facts. We learned how to introduce the topic, write 3 facts and a conclusion sentence. Students started off this week choosing a topic of their choice and writing a topic sentence, 3 facts and a conclusion. Then, we even practiced making a google slide presentation with 3 facts about Veteran's. We are really working on using only facts and no feeling sentences or opinions. We got to have a Veteran's assembly this morning. We heard from a retired Navy Captain. He talked to us about the importance of serving our country in many different ways and being kind and cooperative.
Pathways: Screech visited twice this week to tell students about 2 new spelling rules. When we hear the /KW/ sounds we will spell them with a QU. They also learned that Q always needs U. Screeched also taught us that when we hear /K/ at the beginning of the word, we can choose a C or K to spell that sound. However, more words start with C than with K so we should choose C if we aren't sure. We are continuing to review vowel town and the vowel spellings as well. Shared Reading: We are learning how to ask and answer questions about a text. This week we practiced asking questions before reading a text, during the text and after reading the text. We also practiced reading questions and highlighting sentences in the text that help us answer those questions. Math: Students have been learning strategies that help them to be fluent when solving addition and subtraction problems within 10. We will continue to work on that learning target ALL YEAR :) But now we are learning how to add and subtract accurately within 20. This week we learned how to use the number line to accurately add and subtract within 20. Writing: Over the last 2 weeks we have been learning how to write a specific topic sentence that includes a when, who and what (Over the summer, I went to Florida.) then we practiced writing 3 specific details and an ending sentence. We learned that we could end our writing by restating the topic sentence, asking a question related to our topic, or by writing how we feel about our topic. Students have been working very hard! Over the last 2 weeks we have had a lot of FUN! Some students got to eat lunch with Mrs. Farrell for green charts the whole month. We took a school wide KC royals picture. Our class earned a slipper day for great cafeteria behavior. We had 2 Watch Dog dads visit us. We had a fall party and we had the APEX program!!!! What a FUN filled couple of weeks!
The students are doing a great job working in their literacy stations. I have been meeting with students on their blue ribbon sight words. We had several friends earn their blue ribbons already and the rest of us are still practicing and making progress. We would love to see everyone in our class know these words by the end of 1st quarter. You can find resources under the sight words page to help your child practice. In Pathways students are practicing saying Vowel Town fast, finding the vowel sounds and giving the spellings of vowel sounds. We are also practicing spelling words with "What's your name E" and EE. We continued learning about the day and night sky this week focusing on the moon. We learned that the moon changes shapes or phases. The students listened to a cute story and observed time lapse videos of the real moon. In math, we reviewed our doubles facts and learned about near doubles facts (3+4, 4+5...). The students are getting better at using strategies to solve problems mentally. We will start our math fluency shortly. Look for level 1 to come home with the explanation. This week in writing we practiced writing using capitals, spaces and punctuation. We related the 3 writing goals to a traffic light. We practiced using our green, yellow and red markers to check our writing for all three goals. This past month we have learning about being Respectful to our peers and adults. This class is very respectful to me and each other. They are a great group of friends who care for one another. Although all of our students are respectful, Alyssa Garcia is our class award winner. She is always helping others and myself. She takes turns, solves problems respectfully and is always very kind.
Math: I can add and subtract fluently within 10. Last week we learned how to add and subtract 0,1 & 2 to/from a number. This week we are practicing our doubled facts (1+1, 2+2, 3+3...) to help us add and subtract mentally. Reading: I can use comprehension strategies to ask and answer questions about a literary text. This week we are talking about our "Schema". Schema is what you already know or what you have experienced. We can use our schema to make connections to the texts. This week we practiced making connections to 2 text-Owen and Ira Sleeps Over. When we use our schema to make connections we build on our story comprehension. Science: I can predict patterns in the day and night sky. This week we acted as scientist as we observed the day and night sky. We used time lapse videos to help us with our observations as well. We also learned what causes day and night (the Earths rotation). Next week we will talk about the moon! We started our station rotations this week: listen to reading, read to self, literacy job. The students are doing a wonderful job of working the whole time and working quietly. I will hopefully be able to start pulling small groups starting sometime next week. Pathways: I can apply grade level phonics to decode single syllable words. I can apply phonetic spelling. This week we finished introducing the rest of vowel town (R apartment). We also learned all of the vowel spellings on vowel town. We will continue to work o. Saying vowel town and we will begin practicing vowel spelling. Practicing our blue ribbons sight words! We also had time for some extra fun! Check out all the fun we have on the playground! We also had two classroom watch dog dads this week. Reed's dad and Gino's dad! Thanks for hanging out with us! We ended our week with a class meeting. The students were able to come up with all kinds of things our class has done well on this week (learning our doubles, writing ideas, making connections, being kind....). The. We talked about things we can work on- lining up and talking. Then we ended with giving a neighbor a compliment. They melt my heart! During our reading and writing times we are finishing up our station introductions. This week students practiced the following stations: Round Up Rhymes, Survey Station, Find It Station, Mystery word, Listening to Reading, make a list, my squiggle story and mini books. We also introduced the 5 finger story where students are encouraged to write a topic sentence, 3 details and an ending. In Social Studies we continued to discuss rules and laws, along with celebrating Constitution Day. We learned that we have rules and laws to keep us safe, keep things fair and to protect our environment. We are currently working on the math learning target: I can add and subtract FLUENTLY within 10. We are learning various strategies to help us do mental math/math more quickly. This week we focused on adding and subtracting 0, 1, 2, & 3 to or from a number. We were able to get the class computers out. We practiced retrieving them, logging in and accessing Mrs. Farrell's Google Classroom and our class website. We also learned how to do the listen to reading station using our Chrome books.
We are continuing to introduce and practice our station activities that help us to read and spell our grade level sight words and decodable words( Playdough Station, Magnetic station and White board...). We are also learning about our writing stations that we will rotate through during small group time. These stations help us to practice writing narrative pieces, using conventions and using correct English grammar when we write. This past week in math we learned about addition and subtraction number sentences. We learned that they were made up of parts and a whole. We also review Gus the Plus sign, Linus the Minus sign and Squeekle the Equal sign. We practiced finding the missing part in a part part whole mat and writing addition and subtraction number sentences to match our part part whole mats. During Social Studies, we worked in small groups to sort Rules and Laws. We hung them around the room and discussed how our posters were the same and different. Then we discussed how rules and laws are the same and different.Mrs. Givens, our school counselor came by this past week and visited with us about being a first grader. We reviewed what first graders look like, what they sometimes think, feel and do. We discovered that as a first grader we might feel many different ways and different times. We also found that we have grown since last year and maybe some of the things we think of have changed.
We had a short week but we still managed to pack in a lot of learning and plenty of fun. We started introducing our literacy stations this week during our reading and writing times. During writing this week we learned how to write a sticker story, how to write a creative story based on a magazine picture and how to retell a familiar fairy tale. We also practiced some of our word work stations such as read and write the room, phonics matts, rainbow writing. This week we also learned how to pick a good book based on purpose, interest, comprehension, and knowing the words. We started an authors study on Kevin Henkes during the first week of school. Over the last 3 weeks we have read several of his books. Ask you child about their favorite Kevin Henkes book. In math we have been learning the concepts behind addition and subtraction. We will be using a part part whole mat and tens frames to help us practice addition and subtraction. I want to welcome all first graders, parents and family to our class website! We have had a busy and fun first 2 weeks of school. We have been learning class routines and expectations. We have also been reviewing kindergarten concepts as we practice how to work in pairs and work independently. Check out some of the fun and learning we have done so far! In math we are working on reading, writing and counting using numbers to 20. Students played a game with a partner where they would spin a spinner and write that number and the next 5 numbers. We are working on being more fluent as we count forward and backward from any number within 20. This fluency will help us as we move into addition and subtraction to 20. The students have been learning how to choose a topic, write a topic sentence and then add at least one detail. This past week we also talked about sticking to the topic. We learned that the topic sentence is the first sentence of our story and introduces what our whole story will be about. All other sentences should tell more details about the topic. Over the last couple of weeks our class has been learning about some of our U.S symbols. We have been reading text, using an online database called Pebble Go and we have gone on several virtual field trips in order to learn facts about these important symbols. We had some 3rd grade "tour guides" visit our class and help us maneuver through some of the virtual websites. The students took notes after visiting the White House, Statue of Liberty, Capital Building and the Lincoln Memorial. The students loved seeing these symbols in such a real setting and they learned a lot of interesting information. If you are interested in checking out some of these sights at home check out the Padlet below, along with some of our pictures from that day. Once we return from Spring Break, the students will choose 1 symbol that they are interested in further researching and then they will create and present an informational slide show!!! This past week we have been working really hard to show what we know and have learned throughout the year. I have asked them to do a lot of hard work and they have. I am so proud of them and all that they are learning. We got to do a nice little booster activity where we watched a cute video about how we are all different and special. Then each student wrote a sentence about why they are special. Check out the Padlet below to see why your kid thinks they are special. lastly, after such a crazy week and all their hard work, I was so glad we got to celebrate with a super fun class party, a week of wonderful weather and a nice break from school. I hope you all enjoy your week and get recharged! Here are some pics from the party!!!! |
