We have really enjoyed getting to know one another this month. What a great group of kids. They get along really well and have found lots of ways that they are all alike. Below are some pictures of them finding 3 things that they all like and 3 things that they all dislike. We have begun working on our learning targets for math, writing, social studies, science, reading and phonics. Check out below all that we have been learning about and practicing to prepare us for the school year. We have spent a lot of time learning about our literacy jobs that we will have over the course of the year. While the teacher meets with small groups of children to help them progress in their reading fluency, reading comprehension and spelling, the rest of the class will be reading to themselves, listening to reading on the computer or completing a literacy job. These literacy jobs reinforce our reading, writing and spelling learning targets. Check out pictures below of students practicing the playdough station, survey station, squiggle writing and more. Reading: In addition to practicing our literacy stations, students have been practicing how to read quietly to themselves and how to read with a partner. We discussed REAL READERS vs FAKE READERS. Students have also been learning how they can use their SCHEMA to make connections when reading. They can make text to self connections, text to text connections and text to world connections. Students have also been learning our vowel sounds on vowel town. Writing: Students started the year by making a topic list and brainstorming a variety of topics to write about all year long. We also reviewed how to write using nice handwriting and spaces. We have been practicing how to stretch our words out and how to spell each sound or use our word walls to help us spell tricky words. I am really impressed with our class' writing this year! Math: Students are working on how to add and subtract FLUENTLY in 10. We have been learning strategies for adding and subtracting 0 and counting up/back for 1, 2, & 3. Our 2 main strategies are FIST IT and TOUCH POINTS so far. Ask your child how to use these strategies to solve 5 + 3. We will be learning other strategies like doubles, near doubles, make a ten and more. Rules and Laws: Mrs. Welch has been teaching our students the difference between a rule and law and why we have specific rules and laws. (To keep us safe, protect our environment, keep things fair...) APEX FUNDRAISER: We are starting our APEX fundraiser. Please get your pledges in and help our class get enough money to buy more technology and help our school earn money for field trips and new playground equipment.
